Prevention and Detection

Middle-Age African-American ManWhile cancer treatment capabilities give our community a certain level of assurance, it’s not enough. Our goal is to stop cancer altogether, or at the very least, arrest it in the earliest stage possible. That’s why we’re committed to providing prevention programs to area residents, as well as diagnostic procedures that are technologically superior. Our staff takes preventive measures a step further by putting diagnostic tools to work in the community. Throughout the year, Gibbs Cancer Center offers a host of cancer screening programs to residents in the area.

Gibbs Cancer Center takes the responsibility educating the community about cancer very seriously. We provide free educational sessions to the public throughout the year on topics such as breast, gynecologic, colorectal and prostate cancers. For each of these topics, we offer information on prevention, early detection, treatment options, nutrition and fatigue.

Gibbs Cancer Center offers Freshstart Smoking Cessation Classes, a program of the American Cancer Society. As a participant of Freshstart, you will receive printed information, the advice of a skilled facilitator and support from a group of others interested in quitting smoking. The classes are free and consist of four one-hour sessions. Participants should plan to attend each session. Regular nutrition education classes specific to cancer prevention are taught by a registered dietitian at Gibbs Cancer Center. While these classes are open to the public, the dietitian also gives individual counseling to patients and caregivers. The dietitian provides nutritional assessment and monitoring as well as education for patients experiencing nutrition difficulties during and after cancer treatment.
