Congregational Nursing

The Congregational Nursing Program of the Spartanburg Area is a partnership between Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, local churches and foundations interested in a healthier community. The program provides health-related education, resources, consultation, evaluation and networking for more than 80 faith communities in the Spartanburg area.

What is a congregational nurse?

A congregational nurse is a registered nurse who serves as a member of the health ministry team in a faith or community based organization. These nurses' duties include:

Health Educator - coordinating seminars, workshops, support groups and discussions on a variety of health subjects
Personal Health Counselor - taking time to listen, share scripture, pray and help clarify the relationship between one's faith and health
Referral Agent - helping parishioners to find congregational and community resources to meet their healthcare needs
Volunteer Facilitator - recruiting and training volunteers
Health Advocate - supporting and defending the parishioners' healthcare rights, values and beliefs
