About Carolinas Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology

We provide a complete program of prevention, diagnosis and treatment for individuals with endocrine and metabolic diseases, with special interest given to patients with diabetes mellitus.

What is endocrinology?
Endocrinology is the medical specialty and study concerned with hormone production and dysfunction, such as:

• Adrenal disorders
• Diabetes mellitus
• High cholesterol
• Osteoporosis (bone softening)
• Pituitary disorders
• Thyroid issues (overactive or underactive)

What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that prevents your body from properly using the foods you eat. When food is digested, it breaks down into sugar called glucose, which the body uses for energy. Normally, the pancreas releases a hormone called insulin, which helps take the glucose from the blood to the body’s cells, where it is used or stored for future use. A person with diabetes does not produce enough insulin, so the glucose in the blood rises above normal.
