Our practice combines diverse elements of surgical oncology and endocrine surgery. We have chosen to subspecialize in the following areas:

R. Barry Hird, M.D., F.A.C.S. (breast surgery and complex general surgery): benign and malignant breast disease and complex general surgery, including ventral hernia repair.

Richard Orr, M.D, MPH, F.A.C.S. (surgical oncology and endocrine surgery): breast disease, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease, benign and malignant gastric surgery, gastroesophageal malignancies, adrenal masses, melanoma and other skin malignancies, general surgical oncology, including gastrointestinal tract, head and neck, and sarcomas.

Christophe Nguyen, M.D., F.A.C.S. (surgical oncology and thoracic oncology): specialization in treating patients with lung cancer (including using video-assisted techniques), esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver and colorectal cancer.

Dr. Nguyen is a pioneer in the field of robotic surgery for surgical oncology. He is the first surgeon in South Carolina to successfully complete a pulmonary lobectomy, pneumonectomy, splenectomy and partial hepatic lobectomy using the da Vinci® robotic system.

All Surgical Oncology at Gibbs physicians are well-trained in laparoscopic surgery and use minimally-invasive treatment methods when appropriate.

At Surgical Oncology at Gibbs, each surgeon specializes in a relatively narrow area, which allows them to devote the time and expertise to each patient with dignity, compassion and courtesy. Surgical Oncology at Gibbs is the leader in the local oncology community and well-respected on a national level. All surgeons are well-trained in laparoscopic surgery and use minimally-invasive treatment when appropriate. Each surgeon has completed a Society of Surgical Oncology-approved fellowship and is credentialed by the MD Anderson Network through Gibbs Cancer Center.
