Hospice Volunteers

Caring HandsSomeone has wisely said, “No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another.” At Spartanburg Regional Hospice, our volunteers serve in order to lighten the burdens of people each day. Compassionate and skilled volunteers are part of a great team committed to helping patients, families and staff.

Spartanburg Regional Hospice Volunteers:

• are integral members of the hospice team
• are caring, open, flexible and accepting
• give back to life what has been shared with them
• affirm life, not just by words, but by actions
• enrich their own life by enriching the lives of others

We Provide Training

You do not have to be a healthcare professional to volunteer with Spartanburg Regional Hospice. We welcome you to use the talents you already have or to broaden your horizons and learn a new skill that interests you. Our hospice staff will train and help you feel prepared, confident and appreciated in whatever role you choose. We do ask that all volunteers bring the following qualities to their work:

• good communication and listening skills
• a nonjudgmental attitude
• reliability
• flexibility
• compassion

Did you know that when you volunteer to help others, you increase your own odds of living a healthier, longer, more satisfying life?

The Corporation for National and Community Service in April 2007 published a research report finding that just two hours of volunteer service a week can:

• Improve functional ability and health outcomes for those who volunteered
• Improve physical and mental health in volunteers due to a personal sense of accomplishment
• Lower rates of depression in volunteers age 65-plus
• Reduce despair and depression for adult heart attack survivors who volunteer
• Improve overall health and longevity

Our Needs:
• Bereavement support for families
• In-home caregivers
• Hospice Home greeters
• Hospice Home In Need patient sitting service as requested (days, evenings, on-call)
• Other opportunities: Professional services, administrative support, events
