The History of Robotic Surgery

The first documented robot assisted surgery began in the mid 80’s. Since then, robotic surgery has continued to evolve and improve the surgical outcome for patients undergoing urological surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, lung surgery, gynecological surgery and general surgery.

A Bit of General History on Robotic Surgery

  • 1985 – first documented robot assisted surgery by the PUMA 560 robotic surgical arm during a neurosurgical biopsy, a non-laparoscopic surgery
  • 1987 – robotic surgery introduced with the first laparoscopic procedure
  • 1990 – AESOP system became the first robotic system approved by the FDA for endoscopic surgical procedures
  • 2000 – the da Vinci robotic surgery system was introduced and the first system approved by the FDA for general laparoscopic surgery.

As one of the leading centers in the Southeast for Robotics, Spartanburg Regional uses robotic assisted technology and offers the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System as a minimally invasive approach to robotic surgery, which offers less down time for patients and greater precision for surgeons.
