This class in American Sign Language is designed to educate medical staff and other professionals to feel comfortable with the unique communication needs of patients who are deaf and hard of hearing. Clear communication with patients / clients is essential in providing quality care. Hospitals often are faced with providing medical services to patients who communicate in other languages. In such cases, interpreters must be provided to ensure that clear communication takes place. However, when a patient is hard of hearing, there is often a significant lapse of time before a sign language interpreter can be secured. This class is designed to provide the communication skills, legal mandates and practical approaches to survival communication with patients who are deaf or hard of hearing until a qualified interpreter arrives on the scene.
