About the Hospitalist Fellowship Program
In 2011, Spartanburg Regional Inpatient Specialists, in collaboration with Spartanburg Family Medicine Residency, began offering a one-year fellowship for family medicine graduates interested in pursuing a career as a hospitalist. Based on our successful experience, we are pleased to continue to offer this opportunity.
The field of hospital medicine is now well established and continues to grow, with demand for hospitalists far outweighing supply. However, fewer than four percent of U.S. hospitalists are family medicine graduates, with the vast majority being BC/BE in internal medicine. In fact, there are many hospitalist programs that limit their recruitment to internal medicine graduates only or require additional fellowship training.
With the concentrated inpatient training this fellowship provides, graduates will gain the experience needed to meet the credentialing and clinical qualifications that many hospitalist programs require. Fellows will train at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, a 540-bed teaching and research hospital. Fellows will have the opportunity to sharpen their skills in a variety of Spartanburg Regional’s specialized settings including the Heart and Cancer centers, three different intensive care units and with inpatient hospice. By participating in a multitude of hospital processes including quality, utilization review, medical education and information technology, fellows will be guided by a team of highly qualified and engaged physicians who are passionate about numerous aspects of hospitalist care. A specially selected group of Spartanburg Regional inpatient specialist members participate as preceptors for the fellowship and are involved in teaching medical students as well.
