Spartanburg Regional General Surgery Residency

The Spartanburg Regional General Surgical Residency is a fully accredited five-year community based training program with an academic affiliation with the Medical University of South Carolina. Surgical training in Spartanburg is designed to prepare the resident for certification by the American Board of Surgery and a successful career as a general or subspecialty surgeon. Our training program accepts three categorical residents and 2-3 preliminary residents each academic year.

Our residency balances an excellent operative experience with a strong academic exposure. This model assures a fundamental knowledge of the basic sciences, and understanding of evidence-based surgical training, and compliance with the core competencies defined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Top 10 reasons for doing your residency at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center:

  1. We have a hybrid program that offers excellent academics with a superb surgical experience led by a strong faculty. Because of the nature of our program you are treated with dignity and as an individual adult learner.
  2. We offer strong and diverse operating experience beginning in PGY-1 year. Our chief residents graduate with more than 1200 major operations and are well-versed in advanced laparoscopic techniques and surgical oncology. Because there are no subspecialty fellows, our chief residents have performed procedures such as laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection, laparoscopic adrenalectomy, laparoscopic-assisted stomach and esophageal resections, VATS lobectomy, and minimally invasive vascular surgery.
  3. An excellent faculty including fellowship-trained surgeons in surgical oncology, breast, trauma/ critical care, vascular, and colorectal surgery. Additionally, many private practice surgeons who trained at SRMC are committed to the continued success of our program.
  4. Excellent American Board of Surgery pass rates.
  5. A congenial working environment and a program director who cares about your personal life. The 80 hour work week in enforced.
  6. Graduating residents have done extremely well when pursuing fellowships.
  7. A vibrant and financially stable medical center. Major additions have included the Emergency Center in 2005, Gibbs Regional Cancer Center in 1999, and the Regional Outpatient Center in 1998. The Village at Pelham, the Bearden-Josey Breast Center and new operating suites opened in 2008.
  8. Affiliated with an outstanding clinical research department. Our cancer center is one of only 15 National Comprehensive Cancer Control Programs and we are affiliated with the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
  9. Spartanburg is a great place to live! Housing is affordable with stable (or increasing) property values.
  10. Only two outside rotations (transplant – 1 month) and pediatric surgery (2 months)

We firmly believe that residents can be taught to provide excellent state-of-the-art healthcare in an atmosphere conducive to a quality personal life.
