Speech-Language Pathology
Spartanburg Regional Medical Center offers speech-language pathology services while patients are in the
hospital and as outpatients.Speech-language pathologists are involved in specialized treatment programs benefiting patients with deficits such as:
- Speaking/language disorders
- Voice disorders
- Cognitive deficits
- Facial weakness
- Swallowing disorders
- Neurological disorders (see Neurological Rehabilitation)
Diagnoses outside of the Speech-Language Pathology program that are treated include but are not limited to:
- Voice disorders such as hoarseness
- Bell’s palsy
- Stuttering
- Swallowing disorders
- Training in use of a communication system
- Training in speech after tracheostomy placement
- Speech deficits after a cochlear implant
After receiving a physician’s order, the speech-language pathologist will evaluate to determine the problem areas.A treatment plan will focus on improvement of the deficits.
Tests Performed
- Modified Barium Swallow Studies: An X-ray study of swallowing completed by the SLP and a radiologist. Moving X-ray images of the mouth and throat are taken while the patient swallows food and liquid. The evaluation determines the types of food and liquids that are safe for a patient to swallow.
- Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing: An evaluation using a flexible scope while viewing the swallow on a computer screen.
- Voice Laboratory: A computer system used to evaluate voice for patients with voice disorders.
