Primary Stroke Centers

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s two Primary Stroke Centers, located in the Upstate at Spartanburg Medical Center (SMC) and Pelham Medical Center (PMC), are certified through the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP).

SMC was the first certified Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center in S.C. in 2005. PMC received accreditation as a Primary Stroke Center in January 2016 and is Greer’s only certified primary stroke center.

Our partnership with the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) to seek Primary Stroke Center Certification focuses on quality-driven stroke process of care programs. The certification is based on evidenced-based, nationally established standards.

A certified stroke center allows patients to receive the best possible care from the time the stroke happens through recovery. Stroke centers have quality guided protocols and processes in place to allow rapid identification and timely treatment of stroke, which help reduce disability.

The HFAP initiated the Primary Stroke Certification program in 2006 using recommendations from the Brain Attack Coalition as the foundation for its standards.

Among SMC and PMC’s efforts to become stroke certified was the creation of a Stroke Response Team, which assembles to control and monitor stroke victims brought into the system’s emergency center or those who develop a stroke while an inpatient at the hospital.

Symptoms of a stroke include: sudden weakness, numbness or paralysis, especially on one side of the body, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking, loss of balance and dizziness, accompanied by a headache.

The Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) is one of only three national voluntary accreditation programs authorized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to survey hospitals for compliance with the Medicare Conditions of Participation and Coverage.
