Level I Trauma Center: Spartanburg’s Highest Level of Emergency Care

From our trauma surgeons and trauma nurses to specially equipped treatment areas and helicopter landing pad, Spartanburg Medical Center’s Level I Trauma Center has the experience, expertise and facilities to care for the most critically ill and injured.

Trauma center designation by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control means we have a trauma team ready to respond promptly during the most serious medical emergencies. And we have met strict requirements for staffing, speed of responding, training and quality.

Our specialists in emergency medicine, general surgery and anesthesia are available at all times. And we have dozens of specialists on-call, ready to respond to the specific needs of each patient arriving with trauma injuries. These specialists include:

  • Heart surgeons
  • Hand surgeons
  • Neurologic surgeons for injuries to the brain, spinal cord and other nerves
  • Obstetrics/gynecologic surgeons
  • Pediatric surgeons
  • Ophthalmic (eye) surgeons
  • Reconstructive and plastic surgeons
  • Orthopedic surgeons
  • Surgeons who specialize in critical care medicine
  • Radiologists
  • Interventional Radiologists (who provide treatment as well as diagnosis)
  • Thoracic surgeons for injuries in and around the chest area.

We also work closely with the many experienced paramedics in the community. And for emergency air transport, the crew of the Regional One medical evacuation helicopter can be prepared in minutes to fly patients to our Trauma Center.

Our Trauma Center includes four dedicated trauma bays, or treatment areas, plus an on-site radiology department with CT, X-Ray and ultrasound imaging equipment. It is also backed by the full resources of the staff and facilities of Spartanburg Medical Center.
