Additional Information

What are Dr. Cleland's favorite hobbies? “Anything outdoors, playing the guitar, anything 'coffee.’ I am still hoping to get a Jeep one day.”

Dr. Cleland's care philosophy: “I believe that taking care of a child’s health sets him or her up for a successful, healthy lifestyle.”

What does Dr. Cleland say to his patients to inspire them to strive for a healthier life?  “Health is not a destination, it’s a journey.  It's OK to stop and enjoy the scenery, but you can’t stay. There's more to see!”

How many years has Dr. Cleland been practicing medicine?  “I started my career in medicine when I went back to medical school in 2003. I have been fortunate to be at Spartanburg Regional since 2011.”

Why does Dr. Cleland love to practice medicine?  “I love that every day is a new adventure. I love being able to make a difference. I love that I am setting families up to live successful, healthy lifestyles.”

Why did Dr. Cleland pursue a career in medicine? “Medicine, to me, is a calling. When I graduated Clemson in 1994, I taught high school right here in Spartanburg. I also work with teenagers all over the country with a national youth ministry organization. I organized camps and conferences for thousands of teenagers between here and California. Believe it or not, I also played in a band.

"It was Sept. 11, 2001, and my wife and I found ourselves on the second floor of Spartanburg Regional delivering our first child, Grace.  We only had a short time with her on Earth, but it made such a lasting impression on my life.

"The nurses, doctors and staff right here at Spartanburg Regional made such an impact to me and my wife. I saw a ministry like never before as they cared for more than just our medical needs. It was at that time I felt God calling me back to medical school to change my ministry focus. Here I am today, still ministering to children and families, but with a different twist.”
