Sports Medicine Institute opens in Spartanburg

SRHS and Upward Sports partner in sports medicine

Whether you are trying to stay in shape or be the quarterback on the football team, the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS) Sports Medicine Institute will help you stay on track with your fitness and athletic goals.

The SRHS Sports Medicine Institute partnered with Upward Sports to offer strength, training, rehabilitation and orthopaedic services. SRHS has a sports medicine office on-site at the Upward Star Center in Spartanburg.

John Lucas IV M.D. heads up the Sports Medicine Institute and is part of the Medical Group of the Carolinas. Lucas received his medical degree at the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Wake Forest Family Medicine program in Winston-Salem, NC. He is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

The institute employs an extensive staff of sports medicine, fitness and healthcare providers to assist patients with prevention and recovery of injuries from sports participation.

The institute is staffed with board-certified doctors who specialize in sports medicine, pulmonary medicine, cardiopulmonary exercise and orthopaedic surgery—including spine surgery and joint replacement. Our physical therapists are experts in sports medicine and rehabilitation.

The Sports Medicine Institute offers sports and fitness testing along with orthopaedic and cardiopulmonary consultation. The institute can also help athletes return to their former fitness level after injury and help achieve their greatest potential.

What programs are available?

The SRHS Sports Medicine Institute includes a Concussion Clinic, Ultrasound-Guided Injections and a Saturday Sports Medicine Clinic.

While playing sports, athletes may risk a direct blow to the head or another part of the body causing acceleration and deceleration of the brain within the skull, resulting in a concussion. The Sports Medicine Institute includes a Sports Concussion Clinic to aid athletes suffering from a concussion or post-concussive symptoms. Depending on individual needs, other medical providers may be introduced including physical therapists, occupational therapists and neuropsychologists.

Open from September to November, the Saturday Sports Medicine Clinic is designed to deliver medical care to athletes injured at Friday night athletic events. The Saturday clinic is a comprehensive sports medicine and orthopaedic office with x-ray and musculoskeletal ultrasound capabilities.

The Sports Medicine Institute also has advanced technology with the Ultrasound-Guided Injection Clinic, offering precise delivery of medication in musculoskeletal injections. The ultrasound visualizes the anatomy prior to the injection. The needle and needle tip can be seen on the ultrasound screen and the precise location of the injection is assured. The ultrasounds are extremely safe and there is no exposure to radiation. Commonly, ultrasound-guided injections are used in the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, ankle or foot.

How can I make an appointment?

The Saturday Sports Clinic is open from September through November from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-in appointments are accepted. The athlete’s athletic trainer will provide scheduling information.

The Sports Concussion Clinic and Ultrasound- Guided Clinic are open for appointments Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Sports Concussion Clinic, Ultrasound-Guided Injection Clinic and Saturday Sports Clinic are all located at 9768 Warren H. Abernathy Highway, Suite B in Spartanburg, SC 29301.

All of the clinics can be reached at 864-560-BONE (2663) for appointments.

The Upward Star Center is affiliated with Upward Sports, the world’s largest Christian sports league for youth athletics.
