‘Wings of Hope’ Releases Powerful Message

Spartanburg Regional Foundation taps into butterfly imagery to symbolize faith through life’s transitions

This year’s Wings of Hope butterfly release takes place Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 5:30 p.m. at the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health.

“Wings of Hope sends two powerful messages,” said John Dargan, the Foundation’s senior director of philanthropy. “As we release the butterflies, we are acknowledging the release of life in memory of a friend or family member, as well as expressing hope and prayers in honor of those who are currently suffering.”

The community is encouraged to honor and/or memorialize loved ones by sponsoring a butterfly. Donors can add a butterfly to the mass release for $30 or personally release an individual butterfly for $100. All Wings of Hope proceeds benefit the Foundation’s cancer, heart and hospice divisions.

About 150 patients, family members and friends are expected to attend, Dargan said, lending a powerful sense of community to this inspiring event.

Wings of Hope was founded by local businessman Jon Jensen as a way to remember his wife, Terri, who saw the butterfly as a special symbol of hope. Terri passed away in 2009 after a 10-year struggle with cancer.
