13-year-old Donates $1,000 to Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute

Tammy and Ginger Dailey

Ginger Dailey only wanted one thing for her thirteenth birthday: to give to others.

For the second year in a row, Dailey donated money to the Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute. This year Dailey donated $1,000, doubling last year’s donation of $500.

She first donated to Gibbs Cancer Center in 2014 in memory of her grandfather, who she called “Papa.” Dailey’s grandfather passed away in September 2014. After her grandfather died of cancer, she began asking friends and family to make donations to Gibbs rather than giving her gifts for her February 6 birthday.

“She said she didn’t need anything for her birthday,” said Dailey’s mom, Tammy Dailey. “The only gift we gave her was a Rubik’s Cube.”

Dailey’s grandfather was cared for at Gibbs Cancer Center before he passed away.

“The generosity Ginger has shown exhibits leadership and motivation,” said John Dargan, Spartanburg Regional Foundation Senior Director of Philanthropy. “The gift given in memory of her grandfather is an inspiration, as is her desire to help find a cure for cancer. At her very young age, her strong passion is truly exceptional.”

Dailey made a goal of doubling her 2014 donation and collected money from her birthday party and several local businesses.

“It has always been in her heart,” Tammy said. “She doesn’t understand why there isn’t a cure for cancer.”

The money Dailey raised will go towards the Cancer Special Needs Fund, which is part of the Spartanburg Regional Foundation. The donation will support special needs for cancer patients, such as medication, transportation and unexpected expenses.
