Pelham Medical Center Eases Hip and Knee Pain

Your hips or knees feel stiff and painful, and you can’t participate in activities you love without discomfort. Walking has suddenly become a chore, and it seems you can’t go through your daily routine without debilitating pain.

Approximately one in five adults has knee or hip aches. Hip and knee replacements are becoming more common, with an estimated 500,000 hip replacements and 3 million knee replacements expected to be performed by 2030.

Pelham Medical Center (PMC), part of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS), provides medical experts in the care of bones, joints, nerves and muscles. PMC can help with hip fractures, total or partial knee replacements, arthritis, osteoporosis, and more. Your overall orthopaedic and musculoskeletal health affects your hips, knees and other joints. Musculoskeletal pain affects the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves.

But how can you keep your joints healthy so you can continue living comfortably?

Weight loss: Many people with osteoarthritis are overweight, and weight loss will reduce stress on hips and knees. Three to five times an individual’s body weight is put on their joints from activities such as climbing stairs or getting up from a chair.

Exercise and physical therapy: This helps strengthen the muscles, reduce pain, swelling and stiffness, and improves joint functions. This allows for easier and less painful squatting, bending and kneeling.

Medications and injections: These treatments can also provide pain relief and reduce inflammation.

What if these don’t work?

A knee or hip replacement may be your best option. Surgery to decrease pain in the knees and hips may be necessary when you cannot perform routine activities, such as dressing or putting on shoes. The decision to operate is based on how much the pain prevents you from living your daily life.

PMC has helped thousands of people gain or regain a level of fitness and activity so they can live more comfortable and active lives.
