Spartanburg Medical Center Recognized for Cardiovascular Care

Spartanburg Medical Center (SMC) is one of 319 hospitals in the United States to be awarded the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2015. The award recognizes SMC for excellent cardiovascular care.

“This award is a proud achievement and reflects the hard work and dedication of the staff that care for some of our most seriously ill patients and their families,” said Spartanburg Medical Center Chest Pain Center Coordinator Jennifer T. Smith, MSN, RN.

The award recognizes SMC’s commitment to and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. SMC has reached an aggressive goal of treating patients to the level of care outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

The award recognizes premier participating hospitals that have sustained performance measure score composites of 90 percent or better in the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction for eight consecutive quarters, ending quarter four 2014.

Hospitals must consistently follow the treatment guidelines of ACTION Registry® - GWTG™ for at least 24 consecutive months in order to receive the Gold Performance Achievement Award. These guidelines include the use of medications, including:
• Cholesterol-lowering drugs
• Beta-blockers
• ACE inhibitors
• Aspirin
• Anti-coagulants

The Heart Center at Spartanburg Medical Center was ranked No. 1 in the state for overall heart care by Healthgrades in 2013 and 2014, and recently received the Surgery Excellence Award by Healthgrades in 2015.

This is the second consecutive year for SMC to receive the GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award.
