Be Prepared for a Family Crisis

Spartanburg Regional Hospice educates families through Healthcare Decisions Day

Your family member has a health crisis. Who will be in charge of their healthcare needs as power of attorney? Do you know their wishes and beliefs? Have they updated their will recently?

National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD), recognized on April 16, highlights these family crises and works to open the line of discussion and promote advanced planning for healthcare needs.  Spartanburg Regional Hospice is observing National Healthcare Decisions Day on April 16 from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Hospice office, located at 1530 Drayton Rd, Spartanburg.

“People have experiences that they never intended to have,” said Linda Harris, Director of Hospice and Palliative Care. “They aren’t prepared and have not thought of what their values or preferences are. It is important for families to start this dialogue.”

It is estimated that less than 30 percent of the population has an advance directive, which guides decisions about health care if a person is unable to make their wishes known. In the absence of knowing a person’s wishes, families and healthcare providers are frequently faced with making difficult decisions that may not reflect the desires of the individual.

“It is very important to have documents in order for a South Carolina Power of Attorney in order to be prepared for a crisis. It is the most important document you can execute, because you are naming someone to speak for you when you cannot speak for yourself,” Harris said. “You need to have conversations with your family about beliefs and values before a crisis.”

It’s difficult to find the time to write a will or find a health care power of attorney and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS) wants to help make it easier to take these important steps. Join us on Healthcare Decisions Day so you can create your own health care power of attorney. Wes Collins, MA, an Advance Care Planning Expert for Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, will be speaking at Spartanburg Regional Hospice’s National Healthcare Decisions Day Event and answering questions on the importance and ease of creating a South Carolina Healthcare Power of Attorney. Blank documents will be available and no registration is required.

At Pelham Medical Center, a special display in the hospital lobby will provide copies of healthcare power of attorney forms. If visitors would like to complete a power of attorney form, there will be help on hand from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Don’t put it off. Get it done!
