Wade’s and Spartanburg Regional Foundation Feed Patients with Easter Meals

Life is hectic and stressful when a family member is terminally ill. Holidays and family gatherings may go by the wayside. The Spartanburg Regional Foundation, part of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, wants to help ease the stress during these times and create a memorable family experience with Easter Meals for Hospice patients.

"Our Hospice program is committed to helping our patients have the best day they can have every day. With Easter, for many people it’s having a holiday meal. Easter has a special significance for people in the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home,” said Linda Harris, Director of Hospice and Palliative Care. “When patients are declining in their health, having a family gathering is very meaningful.”

For 19 years, Spartanburg Regional Foundation and Wade’s Restaurant in Spartanburg have teamed to help families with loved ones in Hospice to have a special Easter meal together. Through donations to the Foundation, Wade’s creates holiday meals for Hospice families.

“Some families are dealing with the financial issues that an illness has brought on,” Harris said. “Some of our families do not have the emotional ability to have a complicated family gathering. Wade’s provides a wonderful holiday meal with enough food for 12 people.”

The Foundation receives donations designated towards the Easter Meals. These donations purchase a meal from Wade’s Restaurant which can feed a family of 12 or more people.

Right now, Spartanburg Regional Hospice has 130 patients receiving homecare Hospice. With these patients and their 12 guests, Wade’s helps provide more than 1,600 people with a holiday meal.

“When dealing with a loved one in Hospice, you may not want to prepare a fancy meal,” said Shelly Sinclair, Spartanburg Regional Foundation Director of Philanthropy. “We want them to enjoy the holiday with their loved ones. The Easter Meals allow the patients and their family to enjoy a nice meal that they do not have to stress about and can really focus on spending that quality time with their family.”

The Easter Meals are delivered to families on Saturday, April 4, the day before Easter. Wade’s employees prepare the meals that are packaged by retired Duke Energy volunteers and delivered by Hospice volunteers. Each meal comes with directions on how to prepare the meals, specific to that family’s needs. The meals include a meat, sides, tea and dessert.

“We get letters from families that they would not have had a family gathering if it had not been made so easy for them,” Harris said. “Many of our patients are doing their best to live as well as they can. Hospice and Wade’s want Easter be a special day, despite what issues they may be dealing with.”
