Blue Distinction® Center designation for Bariatric Surgery

In 2016, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina recognized Spartanburg Medical Center with a Blue Distinction Center designation. We were recognized for our work in bariatric surgery as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation

Spartanburg Medical Center is accredited as a Comprehensive Center by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program.

Cancer

Quality Oncology Practice Initiative Certification

In 2017, Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute medical oncology and infusion center achieved Quality Oncology Practice Initiative recertification from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

CyberKnife Radiosurgery System

In September 2015, Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute at Pelham was the first in the United States to use the CyberKnife Radiosurgery System® M6, with the next-generation InCise Multileaf Collimation System. This cut the time it takes to use radiation to treat tumors.

Addario Lung Cancer Foundation Community Hospital Center of Excellence

For its high-quality care and treatment of lung cancer patients, the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation recognized Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute in 2015 as a Community Hospital Center of Excellence Award.

Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium

Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute is part of the Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium, which is part of the National Cancer Institute Clinical Oncology Research Program.

Outstanding Achievement Award 

Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer.

Health and Wellness and Community Health

America’s Essential Hospitals 2017 Award for Population Health

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System received America’s Essential Hospitals 2017 Award for Population Health. This award recognizes those who provide help to fight against socioeconomic factors for poor health, such as food insecurity, homelessness, language barriers and more.

South Carolina Hospital Association’s Working Well Initiative Gold Apple Award

In 2017, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System was recognized with the South Carolina Hospital Association’s Working Well Initiative Gold Apple award, for creating a culture of healthy yet affordable foods.

LiveWell Greenville Healthy Workplace

Pelham Medical Center was recognized by LiveWell Greenville as a Healthy Workplace in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

South Carolina Hospital Association’s Working Well 

Pelham Medical Center was recognized by the South Carolina Hospital Association’s Working Well initiative and Prevention Partners for achieving the highest standard of tobacco-free excellence. Its efforts included creating a tobacco-free workplace and providing high-quality tobacco cessation programs for employees.

WorkHealthy America Gold Star Award — Pelham Medical Center

Pelham Medical Center was recognized with the WorkHealthy America Gold Star award in 2016 for tobacco-free associates and campuses.

In 2016, Union Medical Center was recognized with the WorkHealthy America Gold Star award for tobacco-free associates and campuses.

Heart

American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® Gold Plus Receiving STEMI Quality Achievement Award

In 2017, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System was recognized with the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® Gold Plus Receiving STEMI Quality Achievement Award. The award was for meeting specific quality improvement measures as outlined by the American Heart Association, to treat patients who suffer severe heart attacks.

American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award

Spartanburg Medical Center was one of 193 hospitals nationwide to receive the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2017.

Healthgrades' 50 Best Hospital for Cardiac Surgery

Spartanburg Medical Center was recognized as one of Healthgrades' 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery in 2016.

Healthgrades' Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award

For three years in a row (2015-17), Spartanburg Medical Center has received Healthgrades' Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award.

Mission: Lifeline® Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award

In 2016, the American Heart Association awarded Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System the Mission: Lifeline® Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award for its quick treatment of heart attack patients.

American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Bronze Quality Achievement Award

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Bronze Quality Achievement Award for 2016.

Mission: Lifeline® Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award

In 2015, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System was recognized with the Mission: Lifeline® Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. The hospital system earned the award by meeting high-performance standards for quickly and correctly treating STEMI patients. STEMI is a deadly type of heart attack that requires emergency procedures to re-establish blood flow to blocked arteries.

NCDR Action Registry-GWTG Performance Achievement Award

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System received an NCDR ACTION Registry-GWTG Performance Achievement Award in 2014 and 2015 from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry.

Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI with Resuscitation Accreditation

Spartanburg Medical Center received full Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI with Resuscitation Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care in 2016. Spartanburg Medical Center is the first to receive PCI (percutaneous catheter intervention) and resuscitation accreditation in both North and South Carolina. Spartanburg Medical Center was also South Carolina’s first nationally accredited chest pain center in 2003.

Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care

In 2016, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina designated Spartanburg Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center in the Blue Distinction Centers for Cardiac Care.

Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award

In 2015, Spartanburg Medical Center was recognized with the Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award for superior outcomes in heart bypass surgery and heart valve surgery.

Hospice and Home Health

SHPBestSuperior Performer Award

In 2016, Spartanburg Regional Hospice earned the SHPBest HHCAHPS Superior Performer patient satisfaction award from Strategic Healthcare Programs. The award recognizes home health agencies that consistently provide high-quality service to their patients.

Organ Donation

LifePoint Excellence in Donation Community Outreach Award 

In 2016, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System was recognized with the LifePoint Excellence in Donation Community Outreach Award. Ours was the first healthcare system in South Carolina to win an award from the Health Resources and Services Administration for supporting the administration’s Workplace Partnership Hospital Campaign – Phase V.

Sharing Hope SC Excellence in Donation Community Outreach Award 

In 2017, Sharing Hope SC honored Spartanburg Medical Center with the Excellence in Donation Community Outreach Award. The hospital earned this recognition for educating our staff and the public about organ, eye and tissue donation, and for registering donors.

Platinum Recognition for Health Resources and Services Administration Hospital Campaign

Spartanburg Medical Center received platinum recognition by the Health Resources and Services Administration Hospital Campaign for the healthcare system's organ, eye, and tissue donation and registration efforts.

Blue Distinction Center for Knee Replacement Surgery and Spine Surgery – Spartanburg Medical Center

In 2016, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina named Spartanburg Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for knee replacement surgery and for spine surgery.

Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery – Pelham Medical Center

Pelham Medical Center was recognized by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina as a Blue Distinction Center in spine surgery in 2016.

Respiratory Care

Quality Respiratory Care Recognition

Spartanburg Medical Center and Pelham Medical Center received Quality Respiratory Care Recognition from the American Association for Respiratory Care in 2015.

Sleep Services

First Sleep Center

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System had the first sleep center in the Upstate to be accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

HealthStream Excellence Through Insight

In 2014, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s outpatient sleep lab received the HealthStream Excellence Through Insight Award.

Five-Star Rating

Since February 2010, the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care Skilled Nursing Facility has received a five-star rating for overall quality every month from CMS Nursing Home Compare.

Quality Achievement Award for Rapid Response Team Performance Improvement Initiative 

Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care received the Quality Achievement Award for Rapid Response Team Performance Improvement Initiative by the National Association of Long Term Hospitals.

U.S. News & World Report Best Nursing Homes

Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care was named one of U.S. News & World Report's Best Nursing Homes. 

Stroke

Pelham Medical Center's Primary Stroke Certification

Pelham Medical Center received Primary Stroke Certification from the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program in January 2016. This makes Pelham Medical Center the only certified primary stroke center in Greer.

Spartanburg Medical Center's Primary Stroke Certification

In 2016, Spartanburg Medical Center was certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program.

Technology

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System named Most Wired  

In 2016 and 2017, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System was named “Most Wired” by the American Hospital Association’s Health Forum.

Pelham Medical Center named Most Wired  

In 2015 and 2016, Pelham Medical Center also achieved the "Most Wired" designation. The honor is awarded to organizations that leverage information technology to improve performance for value-based healthcare. The improvements are in the areas of infrastructure, business and administration management, quality and safety, and clinical integration.

Trauma

Level I Trauma Center

Spartanburg Medical Center’s Emergency Center has been a Level I Trauma Center since the 1980s. This means the trauma center can care for the most critically ill and injured.

Women and Children

Baby-Friendly designation

In 2017, Spartanburg Medical Center achieved the Baby-Friendly designation. This is a global breastfeeding quality improvement project created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The center is the only facility in Spartanburg County to have achieved this important designation.

Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice Health Plan of South Carolina recognized Spartanburg Medical Center as one of the first hospitals in South Carolina to receive the Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care designations under the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.

Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Spartanburg Medical Center has a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

In 2017, Spartanburg Medical Center was ranked the No. 2 hospital in South Carolina by U.S. News & World Report, as well as Best Regional Hospital – Upstate.

High Performing Specialties 

In 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked seven of Spartanburg Medical Center’s health services as “high performing specialties”: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure and lung cancer surgery.

High Performing Adult Procedures 

In 2016, Spartanburg Medical Center was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as high performing in three adult procedures: colon cancer surgery, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

100 Great Hospitals in American 2015

In 2015, Spartanburg Medical Center was the only hospital in South Carolina to be named among the “100 Great Hospitals in America 2015” by Becker’s Hospital Review.

ISO 9001 Certified Lab

Spartanburg Medical Center has the Upstate's only ISO 9001-certified lab. ISO 9001 is an international quality standard that was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is represented by some 130 countries.

High Performing Status

In 2015, Spartanburg Medical Center was one of 40 nationwide hospitals ranked by U.S. News & World Report as high performing in the Best Hospitals for Common Care ratings. A total of 4,600 hospitals were evaluated nationwide. Spartanburg Medical Center earned high-performing status in five specialty areas: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, and hip and knee replacement.

Patient-Centered Medical Home

Twenty-three practices that are part of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s Medical Group of the Carolinas have achieved national Patient-Centered Medical Home accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

Advisory Board Workplace of the Year

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System was recognized by the Advisory Board as the Workplace of the Year of 2018.
