Hospice Volunteers Celebrated by SRHS

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS) recognized members of its hospice volunteer program during a dinner at the Piedmont Club in downtown Spartanburg on Oct. 17.

Established in 1980, SRHS’s hospice program enables patients to continue a pain-free life and to manage other symptoms so that their last days may be spent with dignity and quality, surrounded by their loved ones. Most patients are cared for in their own home and have 24/7 access to a hospice nurse. SRHS also has a 15-bed hospice home for those patients who need more treatment for pain and physical symptoms than can be provided at home.

“Someone wisely said, ‘No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another.’ At Spartanburg Regional Hospice, our volunteers serve in order to lighten the burdens of our hospice patients and their families each day,” said Linda Harris, Director of Hospice and Palliative Care at SRHS.

Hospice volunteers contribute by:

• Providing companionship for hospice patients and bereavement support for their families
• Serving as in-home caregivers
• Maintaining the Garden of Peace at Regional Hospice Home
• Volunteering for events
• Providing professional services and administrative support.

For more information about becoming a hospice volunteer at SRHS, contact Brook Henderson, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, at 560-5636.
