Award Created in Physician’s Memory
When Timothy Llewelyn, MD, entered his practice every morning he was always smiling.
“He was always so sweet and nice to everyone,” said Llewelyn’s nurse Becky Bragg. “He brightened a patient’s day, because he treated each one like they were the only patient he had that day.”
Dr. Llewelyn gave each patient this level of care for the 30 years he practiced internal medicine in Spartanburg, SC. At the time of his death, Dr. Llewelyn was practicing at Medical Group of the Carolinas—Internal Medicine—Spartanburg.
Dr. Llewelyn passed away on April 11, 2014. In memory of his service, The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence (CCME), located in Cary, N.C., is honoring his life and legacy with the creation of the Timothy S. Llewelyn, MD, Memorial Award.
The Timothy S. Llewelyn, MD, Memorial Award will recognize an outstanding South Carolina physician committed to high-quality patient care and the medical community each fall. This year’s recipient of the Timothy S. Llewelyn, MD, Memorial Award is Hunter Woodall, MD, of AnMed Health Family Medicine.
“It is an honor that the legacy of one of our physicians is being recognized in this way,” said Dean Davis, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Medical Group of the Carolinas. “Dr. Llewelyn was beloved by our community and is greatly missed.”
CCME considers Dr. Llewelyn as one of South Carolina’s most prominent physicians and chose to honor him, a long-time member of CCME’s Board of Directors, by establishing this memorial award.
“We hope this award will honor Dr. Llewelyn’s legacy and commitment to enhancing patient care in South Carolina,” said John B. Smith, MD, board chairman of CCME. “It was easy to tell that he was committed to high-quality patient care. His wisdom and his devotion to patient care in the Carolinas will be greatly missed.”
Dr. Llewelyn served as the chief of staff at Spartanburg Medical Center, part of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, and was a founding member of the St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic in Spartanburg, the first free medical clinic in Spartanburg County.
Dr. Llewelyn was well-known for his outstanding patient care, his integrity and compassion, and his leadership in the health care community. He began his career working in public health for the US Army and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. In 2009, he was named the 2009 D.C. Hull Physician of the Year by the Spartanburg County Medical Society, in appreciation of his many years of service to the society.
