Internship Provides Workforce Opportunities

SRHS, School District Six graduate seven Project SEARCH Interns

Project Search Class of 2015

A classroom at Spartanburg Medical Center prepared seven Dorman High School students for the workforce this year. The students learned skills and a positive work ethic as part of Project SEARCH, an internship program that serves students with developmental disabilities.

On May 26, those seven students graduated from the program and many of them have jobs waiting for them at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS). Project SEARCH is an international program with more than 300 locations across the United States.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. As one of the largest employers in Spartanburg County, we are delighted to serve as the work site for the first Project SEARCH program in South Carolina,” said Gloria Graves, Coordinator for Student Programs with Spartanburg Regional. “The interns in this program have changed the culture of our hospital and dispelled misconceptions about individuals with disabilities.”

Through a partnership between SRHS, Spartanburg School District Six, SC Vocational Rehabilitation Department and Upstate Workforce Investment Board, the first Project SEARCH initiative in South Carolina was founded. During their internship, students worked in many departments around the hospital, including the child development program, sterile processing, endoscopy services and central patient transport.
