“Attention to Detail Sets Us Apart”
Spartanburg Medical Center Named Top 50 in the U.S. for Cardiac Surgery
Much like it takes a village to raise a child, it takes an entire hospital to care for a patient.
When a patient comes to Spartanburg Medical Center suffering from a heart attack and needs surgery, numerous people working diligently to help them on the road to recovery. From EMS to the doctors, nurses and lab technicians in the Emergency Center, catheterization laboratory, operating room and the heart care and recovery units, a large group of people is involved in the care of each patient.
“It would be hard to quantify just how many people are involved in a patient’s care,” said Spartanburg Medical Center registered nurse, Becky Bullard. “It takes a massive amount of team work. No one person can pat themselves on the back for a job well done without patting the backs of many others.”
This teamwork is the reason Spartanburg Medical Center (SMC) was named one of America’s 50 Bests Hospitals for Cardiac SurgeryTM by Healthgrades’ in 2016 and is in the top 5 percent in the nation for cardiac surgery.
The team in the operating room’s team work is what sets them apart.
“Every day we come to work and provide the best care for our patients, so we are ecstatic to receive this recognition. Even though the award spotlights heart surgery, it’s a reflection on the entire institution,” said cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Jason Rousseau, Medical Group of the Carolinas—Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. “Attention to detail is what I think sets us apart. Every little detail does matter in surgery, and paying attention and addressing them is what leads to our quality patient outcomes.”
This recognition confirms that SMC delivers superior outcomes in heart bypass surgery and heart valve surgery. Patients having surgery at nationally recognized hospitals like SMC receive better recovery rates and a lower risk of complications and death.
“This award reflects the hard work and dedication of the staff that care for some of our most seriously ill patients and their families,” said SMC president Phil Feisal.
This isn’t the first time SMC has been recognized by Healthgrades for excellent cardiac care. SRHS has been a Five-Star Recipient for Coronary Bypass Surgery for four years in a row, recipient of the Healthgrades Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award™ for two years in a row and Named Among the Top 10% in the Nation for Cardiac Surgery for two years in a row.
In 2015, SMC was one of 319 hospitals in the United States to be awarded the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award. SMC was also recognized with the Mission: Lifeline® Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association for their quick and appropriate treatment of STEMI, a deadly type of heart attack.
