Specimen Processing Instructions

Plasma:  Centrifuge at 3380 rpm’s (±100) for a minimum of 10 minutes

Serum:  Allow to clot.  Centrifuge at 3380 rpm’s (±100) for a minimum of 10 minutes

Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection.

Transport Requirements

Room temperature:  8 hours  Refrigerated:  48 hours 

Rejection Criteria

•  If not centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. 
•  Gross Hemolysis

Critical Value

Calcium = <6 mg/dl and >13 mg/dl  CO2 = <11 mmol/L   Glucose (adult outpatient) = <40 mg/dl and >499mg/dl, Glucose (adult inpatient) = <54 mg/dl and >400mg/dl, Glucose (children <4 weeks of age) = <40 mg/dl and >400 mg/dl, Potassium (adult) = <2.8 mmol/L and >6.5 mmol/L  Sodium = <120 mmol/L and >160 mmol/L 

Test Includes

BUN, Calcium, Chloride, Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Creatinine, Glucose, Potassium, Sodium, Calculated Anion Gap, BUN/Creatinine Ratio, Calculated Osmolality, Calculated eGFR, and a calculated Modified Cockcroft Gault CrCl.
