I'm in a Gibbs clinical trial

Clinical Research Trials

Clinical research trials help us evaluate new cancer drugs and treatments, as well as discover ways to prevent disease. As a participant in a clinical trial, you can have early access to promising therapies before they are widely available.

Gibbs Cancer Center is currently participating in more than 150 cancer trials as part of our commitment to offer you the most advanced, state-of-the-art cancer treatments possible.

Your cancer team will keep you informed about clinical trials that may improve your quality of life or help you live longer. If there is a clinical trial that applies to your particular type of cancer, your treatment team will evaluate your eligibility to participate. We will consider the trial’s parameters, the type and stage of your cancer, and your overall physical and medical condition.

Team members will explain in detail the potential benefits and risks of a trial. The final decision to participate in a clinical trial is always up to you.

Why Participate?

As a participant in a clinical trial, you have the chance to help prevent, treat or even cure cancers for future patients, while getting expert medical care for yourself. You’ll receive additional care and monitoring that goes beyond standard cancer treatment.

Gibbs staffs the largest research and clinical trials team in the Upstate, with specially trained research nurses and support staff as well as doctors, technicians, social workers and other specialized medical professionals to carefully monitor your health before, during and after the study.

You will be paired with a research nurse who has extensive experience working with people who have cancer. Your nurse will coordinate your care, provide compassionate support and keep you informed about everything that’s happening.

As we strictly follow meticulous protocols, your safety will always be our most important consideration.

Without clinical trials, we would not have the improvements in cancer care we have today. By choosing to join this important investigational process, you become part of something larger than yourself. You’re able to transcend your own illness and contribute to the greater good by helping to improve future treatments, possibly for yourself, a family member or friend.

Our Research Networks

Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute is one of the largest cancer research centers in South Carolina. We collaborate with a number of organizations to provide our patients with the broadest possible access to clinical trials.

Our affiliations include:

NCI Community Oncology Research Program: A program of the National Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health

  • Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium (SCOR), with 22 sites over a five-state area. As part of the National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program, SCOR broadens the reach of clinical trials so people can participate while remaining in their own communities.
  • Guardian Research Network, a nationwide collaborative of nearly 80 hospitals in 10 states aimed at accelerating the clinical trial and drug development process. It works to bring advanced therapies to people in their communities so they can participate in clinical trials without traveling to distant medical sites.
  • Duke Cancer Network, which provides our patients access to additional clinical trials and offers educational support for our researchers.
