Orthopaedic oncology patient talking with his doctor

Orthopaedic Oncology

If you have a bone or soft tissue tumor, our orthopaedic oncology team will help determine the right treatment option for you with compassionate care and expertise. Orthopaedic oncologists at Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute specialize in the treatment of cancerous (malignant) and noncancerous (benign) tumors of the bones and soft tissue.

Orthopaedic tumors are classified in two ways:

  • Primary tumors:Tumors that start in the bone or soft tissue (blood vessels, bone marrow, ligaments, muscles or nerves).
  • Metastatic tumors:Tumors that began elsewhere in the body (such as the breast, kidney or prostate) and spread (metastasize) to the bones or soft tissues.

Both primary and metastatic tumors can cause bone pain and increase the risk of fractures. Some people have no symptoms at all.

Why Orthopaedic Oncology at Gibbs Cancer Center?

Our orthopaedic oncology program is led by Melissa Peters, MD, one of only two fellowship-trained orthopaedic oncologists in the Upstate and one of only four in South Carolina.

Our goal is to help relieve your pain and retain as much function as possible. Many patients who undergo surgery to remove an orthopaedic tumor notice almost immediate pain relief. We also offer non-surgical treatments, such as injections to strengthen the bones and physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the affected area.

Your orthopaedic oncologist will work with your medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgical oncologist and other members of your care team to tailor a treatment plan that fit your needs.

The Gibbs Cancer Center multidisciplinary team meets as a group twice a month to discuss individual patient cases to ensure we provide the most comprehensive, best possible care to our patients.
