Collection Instructions

Viral transport ,sterile containers or sodium heparin tubes, depending on sources.

Volume

Volume: Urine: 4 ml.;  Bronchial: 10-50 ml.;  Blood: 10-14 ml.
Min .volume:  Urine: 4 ml.;  Bronchial :10 ml.;  Blood:  10 ml.

Additional Information

Aid in the diagnosis of disease caused by CMV(eg. viral infections ,pneumonia, and organ transplant related disease

Patient Preparation

None

Specimen Processing Instructions

Do not freeze, maintain blood at room temp. Place all specimens in viral medium, unless otherwise noted.

Transport Requirements

Refrigerate; blood at room temperature; do  not freeze specimens

Specimen Stability

3 days 

Rejection Criteria

Dry swab not in media, leaking container ,wooden shaft swabs

Reference Range

Positive for CMV/Negative for CMV

Test Includes

Shell vial or equivalent multiwell plate and conventional culture. 

Methodology

Conventional tissue culture and shell vial cultures.

TestingFrequency

Shell vial cultures stained at 48 hrs and 4 days after receipt. Cultures positive by shell vial are reported as final. Negatives are continued for 3 weeks ,before reporting as final.
