Container

Whole blood: Lavender –top(EDTA) or yellow-top(ACD) tube
CSF: Sterile tube or plastic aliquot tube
Plasma: Lavender-top(EDTA) tube
Serum : Gold or Red-top tube
Swabs: Viral transport media-(M4 or UTM)

Collection Instructions

Swabs must be in Viral transport media at time of collection.

Volume

Volume: Whole blood:1 ml-ACD;1 ml-lavender-top tube
CSF:2 ml.
 Plasma or serum :  1 ml
Min. volume:  Whole blood: 1 ml-ACD; 1 ml-lavender –top; CSF: 0.5 ml.;
Plasma or serum: 1 ml.

Additional Information

HSV is a single test that both detects the presence of HSV DNA and determines which type is present in the positive samples, There is no mechanism for testing HSV-1 without simultaneously testing HSV-2

Specimen Processing Instructions

Swabs must be in Viral media ;

CSF must not be placed in Viral Media

Do not freeze whole blood

Transport Requirements

CSF, plasma and serum: Frozen; Whole blood: Room temperature; Viral transport media: Refrigerate

Specimen Stability

Whole Blood : Room Temp or Refrigerated  7 days. CSF, Serum, Plasma : Room Temp. , Refrigerated 7 days, Frozen 90 days; Swabs: Room Temp, Refrigerated or frozen 7 days  

Rejection Criteria

Frozen whole blood specimens.
Quantity not sufficient
