Additional Information

Evaluates non-bound calcium; if the tube is opened , the serum is exposed to air which causes a loss of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. This changes the sample pH and can prevent lab from measuring the ionized calcium

Patient Preparation

Specimen Processing Instructions

DO NOT OPEN TUBE!  Place a label on tube that states DO NOT OPEN; Do not freeze.  Tube cannot be shared for other tests

Transport Requirements

Room temp or refrigerate; Do not freeze

Specimen Stability

14 days with unopened tube 

Rejection Criteria

Opened tube; plasma or whole blood; hemolysis ; quantity not sufficient
