Legionella Culture and Stain; Legionella pneumophila; Legionella DFA
Sputum, bronchial washing, bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL), lung tissue, transtracheal aspirates, pleural fluid.
Collect in sterile container
Volume: 5 ml sputum; 1 ml. transtracheal aspirate, pleural fluid, lung tissue; 50 ml bronchial specimens. (50 ml is optimal) Min. volume: 2 ml. sputum; 1 ml. tracheal aspirate, pleural fluid, lung tissue; 20 ml. bronchial specimens.(50 ml is optimal)
Determines the presence of Legionella pneumophila organisms.
Specimen Processing Instructions
Place specimen in sterile container
Refrigerate; Lung tissue must be frozen
Refrigerated : 3 days
Swab specimen; specimen received after 72 hours; tissue in formalin
Reference range accompanies report
Direct fluorescent assay for the detection of Legionella pneumophila and culture for Legionella species
Culture; direct fluorescent antibody (DFA)
