Specimen Processing Instructions

Serum:  Allow to clot.  Centrifuge at 3380 rpm’s (±100) for a minimum of 10 minutes

Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection. 

Transport Requirements

Refrigerate serum if the sample will be tested that day.  If the serum can not be processed the same day, freeze.  Frozen specimens are stable one week. 

Specimen Stability

If the serum sample cannot be processed the same day, freeze.   Frozen: 7 days 

Rejection Criteria

If not centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. 
PLasma samples are not acceptable.

Reference Range

271-318 mOsm/kg

Critical Value

<250 mOsm/kg; >330 mOsm/kg
