Serum and or plasma
PTH: 4.0 ml Gold-top serum separator or 3.0 ml EDTA lavender stopper tube (EDTA is for PTH only) Calcium: 3.5 ml Green - Lithium heparin plasma separator or 4.0 ml Gold-top serum separator
2 ml serum or plasma, minimum 0.5 ml
PTH: Heterophilic antibodies in human serum can react with reagent immunoglobulins, interfering with in vitro immunoassays. Patients routinely exposed to animals or to animal serum products can be prone to this interference and anomalous values may be observed. Additional information may be required for diagnosis.
Specimen Processing Instructions
Serum: Allow to clot. Centrifuge at 3380 rpm’s (±100) for a minimum of 10 minutes
Plasma: Centrifuge at 3380 rpm’s (±100) for a minimum of 10 minutes
Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection.
Do Not freeze serum or plasma for the PTH
PTH: Room temperature: 4 hours Refrigerated: 48 hours It is also extremely important to ensure that patient samples have beenhandled and stored correctly. Incorrect handling of samples will result in a lost of intact PTH.
If not centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. Frozen serum or plasma
PTH: 19-88 pg/ml
Calcium: 0-16 yrs = 8.5 – 11.5 mg/dl
17 yrs and up = 8.9 -10.3 mg/dl
PTH = None; Calcium = <6 mg/dl and >13 mg/dl
PTH and Calcium
PTH: Chemiluminescent technology; Calcium: Indirect Potentiometry utilizing a Calcium ion selective electrode in conjunction with a Sodium reference electrode.
