Must have both tubes full

Volume

Volume:  4 mL in each tube 
Minimum volume: 4 mL in each tube 

Additional Information

Detect folate deficiency; monitor therapy with folate ; evaluate megaloblastic and macrocytic anemia 

Patient Preparation

Verify that patient has not had vitamins containing folic acid during the previous three to five days; if so, consult physician.  Patient should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to collection of a sample.

Specimen Processing Instructions

Do not centrifuge; Leave room temperature specimen in original tube;

LAB processing: Transfer 2nd specimen to Lab Corp tube and freeze

Transport Requirements

1 tube room temperature and freeze 1 tube

Specimen Stability

 Room Temperature and Frozen :7 days 

Rejection Criteria

No frozen whole blood;  plasma; quantity not sufficient.
