Specimen Type

N/A  Must have prerequisite, in date, Type & Screen performed. 

Additional Information

Product requires 20-30 minutes to thaw and prepare.  Order only with a transfusion order.  Patient must have a completed in date pre-transfusion specimen as appropriate for specimen preparation.

Rejection Criteria

Blood armband number from pretransfusion specimen does not match patient.  Patient does not have a blood armband.

Test Includes

Required testing for blood component preparation. 

Testing Frequency

Daily, Monday-Sunday

90 minutes

Pending Blood type & Armband # without ABO discrepancy

Stat

50 minutes from lab specimen receipt

ASAP:     

90 minutes from lab specimen receipt

Routine:

2 hours from lab specimen receipt

Pending Blood type & Armband # with ABO discrepancy

Stat

90 minutes from lab receipt

ASAP:

2 hours from lab receipt

Routine:

3 hours from lab receipt

Order Emergency if availability does not meet clinical need.

Emergency – Type AB Plasma with call specifying “Type AB Plasma” and the following information:      

  • Patient Name

  • Patient MRN

  • Ordering Provider

  • Blood Armband #

 

30 minutes

Expected availability times listed are expected to be obtained 80% of the time.
