Additional Information

Patient must have a completed in date pre-transfusion specimen as appropriate for specimen preparation.  
Birth - 4 months:  Must have prerequisite Neonatal Type & Screen performed this admission. 
>4 months:  Must have Prerequisite Type & Screen performed within past 3 days. 
>4 months and pre-screened as not having been pregnant or transfused in the past 3 months by PAT/AM Preprocedures staff:  Must have Prerequisite Extended Type & Screen performed within past 10 days.

Rejection Criteria

Blood armband number from pretransfusion specimen does not match patient.  Patient does not have a blood armband.

Test Includes

Required testing for blood component preparation.  

Testing Frequency

Daily, Monday – Sunday

*If patient requires an additional phlebotomy for blood type confirmation (no historical type) expect an additional hour.

2 hours from lab specimen receipt

4 hours from lab specimen receipt

Pending Type & Screen with Abnormalities*

Unspecified time for problem serologic resolution.  Will provide periodic updates.  Could be hours to days depending on the serological presentation and availability of compatible components in the upstate/nation.  Alert pathologist on

call if availability does not meet

clinical need.

Emergency – Uncrossmatched Blood with call specifying “Uncrossmatched” and the following information:            

  • Patient Name

  • Patient MRN

  • Ordering Provider

  • Blood Armband #

Emergency

Expected availability times listed are expected to be obtained 80% of the time.
