Container

Viral transport medium for swab specimens or tissue. Sterile container for CSF, urine, stool, fluids.  
Green-top (sodium heparin) tube for blood or bone marrow.

Collection Instructions

Call lab for collection instructions ,if unsure

Volume

Volume: 5 ml whole blood ; 1 ml. CSF; 2-5 ml. fluids; 4-8 g of stool 
Min. volume: same as above

Patient Preparation

Specimen Processing Instructions

Swabs  and tissue should be placed in Viral transport medium.

Fluids in sterile screw top container.

Do not transfer blood or bone marrow to aliquot tube.

Transport Requirements

Refrigerate; 
Blood and bone marrow: Room temperature

Specimen Stability

7 days, except blood 

Rejection Criteria

Bacterial swab specimen; specimen in fixative or formalin; specimen in expired transport media; wooden shaft swab; specimen in leaking container; inappropriate specimen transport conditions

No virus isolated

Test Includes

Based on specimen source, viruses to be detected by cytopathic effect and/or antibody staining  include adenovirus, CMV, enteroviruses, HSV, influenza, mumps, parainfluenza, RSV and V-Z cell culture; identification by fluorescent antibody or  other methods if culture warrants.

Methodology

Inoculation of specimen into cell cultures, incubation of cultures, observation for characteristic cytopathic effect and identification by DFA or other methods.
