Care for Mother and Baby Before Birth

For mothers who might not be able to carry a baby for the full nine months, and for those who need in-hospital care for other reasons, the experienced staff at the Center For Women has created a specialized nursing unit, called Antepartum Care. (“Ante” means before; “partum” refers to birth.) The dedicated healthcare team here includes a physician who specializes in maternal-fetal medicine, or care for mother and unborn child. Also on the team are the mom’s primary care OB/GYN and a neonatologist, or specialist in caring for newborns. These experienced physicians work closely with our dedicated nursing staff to provide close observation and specialized care.

In the 12-bed Antepartum Care Unit, we care for pregnant women with:

  • Pre-term labor (contractions before 37 weeks)
  • Premature rupture of membranes
  • Bleeding
  • Smaller-than-expected growth of the unborn baby
  • Twins, triplets or more babies
  • Polyhydramnious (more than expected amount of fluid around the baby)
  • Constant nausea and vomiting
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic pain
  • Kidney, heart, lung and other health conditions
  • Physical conditions, such as paralysis, that may affect the pregnancy or delivery
  • Plus those who have had surgery
