Kurt Yusi, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic traumatologist who specializes in the care of patients with severe musculoskeletal injures including fractures of the upper and lower extremities as well as the pelvis/acetabulum. He also treats patients with post-traumatic bone problems including failure to heal (nonunion), limb deformity (malunion), and chronic infection (osteomyelitis).
Dr. Yusi hails from Greenville, South Carolina. Originally intending to pursue a career in international conservation, he studied biology and sustainable development at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina on an ROTC scholarship. Following undergraduate study, he served five years as an active duty US Army officer with assignments coordinating medical evacuation for troops patrolling the Korean Demilitarized Zone, as Medical Platoon Leader of a Stryker infantry battalion, and as Executive Officer of a US Army Forward Surgical Team deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dr. Yusi received numerous awards throughout his military career, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Airborne, Air Assault, and Combat Medical badges.
He gained humanitarian experience through public service with the US Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) in Washington and Sudan while working on the government’s emergency response to the crisis in Darfur. These experiences shaped a desire to dedicate his life’s work to caring for global populations affected by trauma and conflict.
Dr. Yusi completed his medical training at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; orthopaedic residency at the University of California, San Francisco; and a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
He is board eligible with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. His academic interest centers on conducting operational research targeting performance improvement in the systems we use to deliver high-quality surgical care and rehabilitation services to trauma patients. Dr. Yusi is interested in opportunities to collaborate with community leaders and organizations, both locally and globally, who are committed to improving access to orthopaedic surgery, advancing quality of care, and empowering people affected by trauma to achieve their full potential.
