Additional Information

Evaluates non-bound calcium; if the tube is opened , the serum is exposed to air which causes a loss of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. This changes the sample pH and can prevent lab from measuring the ionized calcium

Specimen Processing Instructions

DO NOT OPEN TUBE!  Place a label on tube that states DO NOT OPEN. Tube cannot be shared for other tests

Transport Requirements

Room temp or refrigerate; Do not freeze

Specimen Stability

14 days with unopened tube 

Rejection Criteria

Hemolysis; opened gel-barrier tube; gel-barrier not completely sealing the clot; plasma specimen; gross lipemia
