Family Medicine Residency Program
Our program has a long tradition of producing well-trained, full spectrum family doctors since 1972.
Our hospital has been ranked the top community hospital in South Carolina by US News and World Report for 2015. Last year it was voted the best overall hospital in the state and is rated in the top 34 hospitals in the country for 5 Medicare quality metrics. Despite these lofty ratings, our hospital remains a large community hospital with a friendly staff that promotes the tenets of family medicine. Our system is in the midst of a 650 million dollar renovation and expanse project including a new medical office building for family medicine, OB/Gyn, and pediatrics. Our hospital is fully supportive of medical education in word and financial commitment.
Upstate South Carolina is a great place to work and live. We have proximity to the mountains, huge lakes, and beautiful beaches are within a 3 hour drive. Spartanburg is home to Wofford, Converse, and Upstate Carolina Universities which gives the downtown a college town atmosphere. Although we have 4 seasons, the climate is pretty moderate and enjoyable year round for all types of outdoor activities.
Our program is accredited with the ACGME with Osteopathic Recognition and is the largest in the state with 36 residents. Our osteopathic-allopathic relationship really enhances our physical medicine curriculum as well as our total body approach to health in family medicine. We are proud of our rural site in Chesnee, S.C. where 5 residents see their continuity patients. We offer tracts in obstetrics, hospital medicine, palliative care, sports medicine, global medicine, and emergency medicine. Currently we offer fellowships in Hospitalist Medicine, Palliative Care, and Obstetrics. We are diligently working on plans for fellowships in Sports Medicine and Emergency Medicine.
Our focus is training our residents to be well prepared for any number of settings and/or positions within the broad range of family medicine. All of our recent graduates have passed their boards on the first attempt! That includes both allopathic and osteopathic boards on all our residents!
I'm excited about our future in family medicine. Our specialty provides the broadest training for any number of possibilities to make you well suited for the career that you choose. Please take a look at what we have to offer. We think you will be pleased with what you see!
The Medical Education Department at Spartanburg Regional sponsors three training programs for residents, the largest of which is family medicine. We also offer a residency program in general surgery, and a one-year transitional internship.

Because family medicine is the largest residency, complemented by general surgery and the transitional internship, there is no university-style competition or the traditional tug-of-war that is common to most medical schools.
We have 12 family medicine residents per year, with six transitional interns assisting first year call to assure a manageable call schedule. We have the faculty strengths of a university, both in size and diversity, with the stand-alone strength of a community program. Our training programs and the residents complement each other, a departure from what you may have seen at your university.
We are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education* with Osteopathic Recognition.
* The Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The ACGME is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care and population health by assessing and advancing the quality of resident physicians' education through accreditation of graduate medical education programs.
