About

A Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) closure device is a medical device used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) by preventing blood clots from forming in the LAA and entering the bloodstream.

How Does the LAA Closure Device Work?

How Does the LAA Closure Device Work?

  • The device is inserted via a catheter through a vein in the groin and navigated to the heart.
  • The device is positioned at the opening of the LAA. It typically consists of a mesh-like structure that seals off the appendage.
  • Once in place, the device expands to fit snugly and seal the LAA, preventing blood flow into the appendage.
  • Over time, tissue grows over the device, permanently sealing off the LAA.
Candidates for LAA Closure Device

Candidates for LAA Closure Device

  • Patients with non-valvular AFib, particularly those at high risk of stroke but who are unable to take long-term oral anticoagulants due to a high risk of bleeding
  • Patients who have had major bleeding events or have a high risk of bleeding, making long-term anticoagulant therapy unsuitable
  • Patients with a history of strokes or transient ischemic attacks despite being on anticoagulation therapy
  • Patients who prefer a device-based solution over medication

A thorough evaluation by a cardiologist, often including imaging studies and assessment of bleeding risk, is essential to determine if a patient is a suitable candidate for an LAA closure device.

Recovery Time

Recovery Time

The recovery time after the implantation of a Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) closure device is generally short, but it can vary depending on the individual patient’s health.

  • Patients typically stay in the hospital for one to two days following the procedure for monitoring.
  • Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for at least a week to 10 days.
  • Regular follow-up visits with their cardiologist are necessary to ensure proper healing and device positioning.
  • An echocardiogram or other imaging studies may be performed to confirm the device is in place and working as intended.

Benefits

Benefits

  • LAA closure devices significantly reduce the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, comparable to anticoagulation therapy.
  • For patients at high risk of bleeding or those who cannot tolerate anticoagulants, LAA closure devices offer an alternative to long-term medication.
  • By avoiding anticoagulants, patients can reduce the risk of major bleeding complications, which is especially beneficial for those with a history of bleeding issues.
  • Patients who receive LAA closure devices often experience an improved quality of life since they no longer need regular blood tests and monitoring required with anticoagulant therapy.
  • Once implanted, LAA closure devices provide a long-term solution for stroke prevention without the need for ongoing medication adjustments.
