*Leukoreduced platelet apheresis units are routinely kept in inventory at SMC (must be special ordered at PMC), but based on patient demand and availability (both internally and with the blood supplier) there may be a delay especially if requesting specialty platelet products such as CMV negative, irradiated, crossmatched, or HLA matched.  HLA matched platelets can only be ordered once the patient’s HLA typing has been ordered and determined.  All HLA matched platelets also require irradiation to prevent against HVGD (Host vs. Graft Disease).
