Synonyms

Whole Blood Transfusion 

Specimen Type

N/A 

Trauma:  Provided as uncrossmatched blood.  Collect Type & Screen as soon as possible (before multiple transfusions). 

Non-Trauma patients:  Must have prerequisite, in date, Type & Screen performed. 

 

 

Additional Information

Routine patients must have a completed in date pre-transfusion specimen as appropriate for blood product preparation.

 

 

Rejection Criteria

Blood armband number from pretransfusion specimen does not match patient.  Patient does not have a blood armband.

 

 

Test Includes

Required testing for blood component preparation.  

 

 

Testing Frequency

Low titer O Positive whole blood units available only for applicable trauma candidates (females > 50 years of age or males).  Limit 2 units per trauma patient.  Outside of trauma use:  only upon Transfusion Service Medical Director’s approval and availability from blood supplier.

Trauma patient meeting applicable requirements for emergent blood resuscitation.

Non-Trauma patients: 

1. Transfusion Service Medical Director approval

2. Donor availability from blood supplier          

3.  Current completed Type & Screen  

Trauma patients:  Immediately available in BloodTrack Emerge in trauma bay (subject to supplier availability). 

Non-Trauma Patients:  To be determined after consultation with the blood supplier
