Information on a third dose

As of Aug. 13, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control recommend that people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems receive an additional dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine at least 28 days after a second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine.

On Sept. 24, 2021, the CDC and DHEC recommended the Pfizer-BioNTech booster vaccine for a wide range of Americans.

The CDC and DHEC recommend:

  • people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series,
  • people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series,
  • people aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks, and
  • people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational (healthcare) or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.

People should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them. The CDC is still recommending receiving the vaccine manufactured by the same company as your first and second doses.
