Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System established a Clinical Pastoral Education program over 35 years ago, in an effort to provide the highest quality of patient care and community education. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is a training program for clergy persons of all religions and faith groups. The focus of this experiential method of theological education is the learning of the art of pastoral care. The clerics enrolled in this program minister to patients and their family members, providing spiritual care under the supervision of a certified CPE supervisor with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Inc., an internationally recognized organization dedicated to theological training.
Spartanburg Regional offers part-time and full-time training units, a Residency program as well as, Supervisory Education. The ministers enrolled in these programs are able to develop their skills in ministering to individuals and families from a variety of religious traditions and faith groups, empowering those being served to make greater use of their spiritual resources as they face end-of-life issues.
Given the opportunity to minister to individuals who in the midst of their brokenness are seeking a human connection, the chaplain resident/intern is provided the opportunity to reflect on life’s deepest questions. Through the use of case studies and small group experiences the students are able to look at their ministry and develop their pastoral skills, as well as, the capacity to be with those who are hurting.
