At Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute we're making hope happen, together.
At Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute, we provide you with the friendliness and warmth of a community hospital and the advanced level of care you’d expect from an academic medical center. Every patient’s case is reviewed by teams of healthcare professionals that specialize in each patient’s specific type of cancer – these meetings are called multidisciplinary conferences. With our commitment to bringing together multiple specialists to create the best treatment plan for you, and our strong clinical research program, we’re delivering the highest standard of patient-centered cancer care to the entire Upstate South Carolina region.
Our numerous national certifications, including the Commission on Cancer designation, reflect the high standards of our entire cancer program.
To ensure that we develop the best possible cancer treatment plan for you, we hold weekly multidisciplinary conferences for multiple unique cancer programs.
Each program routinely brings together:
- Medical oncology
- Radiation oncology
- Genetic counseling
- Social work
- Nutrition counseling
Working together, your cancer team evaluates imaging and lab results used to diagnose your cancer, they discuss other medical conditions that may affect your treatment, and they consider how they can best care for your physical and emotional well-being. Using their collective expertise, they develop a treatment plan designed to give you the best possible result. When appropriate, their discussion may also include clinical research trial options available through Gibbs.
Our team approach draws on the expertise of all three cancer specialties to select the appropriate cancer treatment options and the best order of treatment for you. When you come for an appointment, we do our best to arrange for you to see several specialists all in one visit. Through every phase of your treatment, we make you an active participant in decisions that affect your care.
Personalized services include:
- A dedicated nurse navigator who coordinates your care and is available for questions and emotional support
- Oncology rehabilitation services to help you maintain daily living skills through occupational, physical and speech-language therapy
- Nutrition counseling with oncology-certified dietitians who will work with you to help you maintain optimal nutrition through cancer treatment and beyond
Once you complete treatment, we have a survivorship program that offers you support as long as you need us.
At Gibbs Cancer Center, we have everything in place to provide you with exceptional care.

Get a Second Opinion
When facing a serious illness like cancer, knowing all of your options is important. Once your cancer has been diagnosed and your treatment plan outlined, you may want to get advice from another specialist before you begin treatment. Getting a second opinion can give you the comfort and reassurance of knowing that all aspects of your case have been carefully reviewed, and that all appropriate treatment options have been considered.
Most doctors welcome a second opinion, and some insurance plans even require a second opinion before beginning cancer treatment.
Requesting a second opinion does not mean that you are unsatisfied with your diagnosis and treatment plan. It will not offend your doctor, interfere with your doctor-patient relationship or significantly postpone your treatment. It is simply a way to become better informed, and make sure that you have access to as much information as possible.
Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute offers a formalized second opinion clinic, in which a team of cancer specialists and other medical professionals review and evaluate your treatment plan. The second opinion team may:
- Discover that your case is more complex than it had seemed
- Recommend additional tests or new treatments not previously considered
- Agree that your current plan is appropriate
In all cases, this second opinion case review will give you access to clinical trials, cutting-edge technology, multiple cancer specialists, and the individualized approach to treatment and patient care that make Gibbs a world-class cancer center.
In a time that is filled with uncertainty, a second opinion can give you the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’ve done everything you can to make an informed decision about your care.
